Flivvers softball falls to Braves

GLADSTONE — With blustery winds bearing down on the field and approaching sub-40 degree temperatures, the Gladstone softball team kept itself warm with two wins (9-7, 14-5) over Kingsford for its home opener Thursday.

In the nightcap, the Braves used a big fourth inning to pull ahead of the Flivvers to secure the five-inning win.

“We had some errors,” Flivvers coach Cori Rice said. “Just some simple errors where balls dropped. There were good efforts by the girls down the line where they didn’t have backup. That led to extra runs, and Gladstone hit the ball really well too.”

In the opener, the Braves earned a less comfortable 9-7 win.

The Flivvers had better luck with their bats in the first game. Allie Lavarnway was 3-3 with three singles, Elaina Bortolini was 2-4 with a two-run homer and a double, and Delaney Cram finished 4-4 with a single, two doubles and a triple.

Gladstone visits Bark River-Harris Monday, and Kingsford visits Rapid River today.
