ESCANABA -- Iron Mountain hit the road to open up its boys tennis season, traveling to Escanaba High School to take on the Eskymos. The mostly young and inexperienced Mountaineers were swept by Escanaba 8-0 in non-conference action.
"I'm proud of the way our guys fought today. For the large majority of our team, tennis is brand new," said Iron Mountain head coach Marcus Celello.
"Most of our guys have only had rackets in their hands for a few weeks, and their improvement from then until now has been fun to watch. After participating in their first tennis match, a lot of the guys now know what to expect moving forward."
Iron Mountain, (0-1) will return home to host Mid Peninsula Conference foe Westwood on Tuesday.
"Escanaba has a great tennis program, and it was great to face a difficult challenge our first time out there," Celello added. "I'm proud of the way Brenden LaPoint and Kurt Ryan conducted themselves during and after their matches. They are great role models for our younger players to look up to, as the veterans on our team."
