Iron Mountain boys tennis edges Kingsford

Mountaineers sweep singles matches for 4-3 triumph

2 min read

KINGSFORD -- The Iron Mountain-Kingsford rivalry was renewed in boys tennis Thursday afternoon at the Kingsford High School tennis facility. The Mountaineers swept the four singles matches to slip past the Flivvers 4-3 in non-conference action.

"We're struggling through some numbers issues for a variety of reasons, so it was tough to start the meet down 0-2. However, our guys fought through some difficult weather in order to come out on top," said Mountaineers head coach Marcus Celello.

Kingsford earned forfeit wins in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles right from the start of the dual.

The Flivvers' Caleb Boone and Isaac Nash earned a win in No. 1 doubles.

"Brenden LaPoint played a well-rounded game at one singles to get us started," Celello said. "Kurt Adiao Ryan battled back from down 0-4 in the second set and won in a tiebreaker. With Kurt's match being the last one to finish, the way he battled was the difference between us going home with a win instead of a loss," Celello said.

"All around, I couldn't be prouder of the group of guys we had out there today,"Celello added.

Iron Mountain (2-1) returns home to host Mid Peninsula Conference foe Gladstone on Monday, and West PAC Conference foe West Iron on Tuesday.

Kingsford (0-1) travels to Menominee on Tuesday for a Great Northern Conference matchup with the Maroons.

"For our first match of the year I thought we played well. Our team is young and with tennis canceled last year, we had many first-time players," said first-year Kingsford tennis coach Mark Novara. "We will improve throughout the year."
