KINGSFORD — Kingsford opened its girls softball season with a doubleheader sweep of Bark River, 18-8 and 13-3.

Zoie Geronimi’s grand slam in the first inning of the first game Tuesday provided a cushion for sophomore pitcher Holly Richer, who gave up five walks and fanned five. Junior catcher Delaney Cram went 3 for 4 at the plate and delivered a three-run homer in the second inning.

“We had a short stretch mid-game with some defensive errors coupled with some well-hit balls by Bark River where you could feel the momentum shift a bit,” said Kingsford coach Cori Rice. “I give our girls credit for maintaining their composure and closing out those innings and not letting it slip away.”

Other leaders were: Claire Phillips, three singles; Macy Holmes, single and a triple; Kylie Mitchell, single and a triple; Allie Lavarnway, double; Lizzy Cross, single; and Teagan Petschar, two walks and hit by pitch.

Elaina Bortolini, a sophomore, earned the win in the second game, walking just two batters and striking out three. Going 2 for 4 at the plate, she delivered a two-run walk-off homer to push Kingsford’s lead to 10 runs after five innings.

“Offensively, in both games combined, the Flivvers had just four strikeouts,” Rice said.

“Zoie Geronimi continued great defensive work at first base, including a double play with a diving catch in foul territory and finishing with the throw to Allie Lavarnway covering second base for the tag,” she said.

“Delaney Cram made some great plays in the dirt behind the plate to keep runners from advancing and added two more hits, going 2 for 4 with a double and a single,” Rice continued. “Claire Phillips added to our offense going 2 for 3 with a huge two-run home run and a double.”

Other highlights at the plate included: Cross, two singles; Petschar, single, two walks; Sam Gaucher, double; and Geronimi, single.
