Marion Park to host Michigan Little League 9-10 year olds state tournament

NORWAY --At what is regarded by many people throughout the U.P. as the nicest baseball facility north of the Mackinac Bridge, Marion Park in Norway and the Norway Area Little League will get to showcase itself.
For the first time in over two decades, a Michigan Little League State Tournament will make its way to Dickinson County. The 2021 9-10 year olds 16- team state tournament will be held at Marion Park from July 22-29.
"We look forward to hosting the state tournament and showcasing Marion Park and the City of Norway," said Norway Area Little League president Scott Sternhagen. "Work is being done on the fields and the facility itself, in preparation for the state tournament."
Sternhagen a Vulcan resident, who took over the NAL presidency from Brian Adams of Vulcan who stepped down last fall, stated that part of the improvements were completed Saturday and Sunday.
"There was a large group of volunteers who came out and helped us replace the worn out portions of the bleachers,"Sternhagen said.
The official logo for the state tournament was created by Jacqueline Leiker's technology class at Norway High School, Strenhagen noted.
To put on a state tournament, there's a considerable amount of financial responsibility involved for the Little League association that hosts it.
"We are actively fundraising for the tournament," Sternhagen said. "We hope to find some area businesses who would like to donate to help us put the tournament on."
The event will bring in considerable business in the way of people traveling into the area, from all different parts of Michigan. Sternhagen also notes that a large amount of hotel rooms have been booked within Dickinson County for the event.
