KINGSFORD — Kingsford’s girls soccer team hosted Marquette at Commemorative Field in Kingsford on Thursday in their first game of the season, battling the Redettes to a 2-2 tie.
“The game started off well for us,” said Kingsford head coach Jon Lorenzoni. “For the first 15 minutes we played good possession soccer and created chances.”
Liz Penegor started the scoring for Kingsford with a header off a pass from Maria Fornetti. The rest of the half went back and forth and saw no more goals.
Kingsford rang the bell again at the 28-minute mark as Erika Malone converted a Marquette turnover and found the back of the net.
“Marquette did not give up. They picked up their intensity and kept attacking, finding the goal twice in the next 20 minutes,” Lorenzoni said.
“We wore down. We have a few starters quarantined and we have had others quarantined these past few weeks and we just didn’t have game legs. This was Marquette’s fifth game and our first. The way our girls battled, words cannot express how proud I am of this team’s effort,” Lorenzoni said.
Lorenzoni gave credit to assistant coach John Bittinger.
“He’s been with the team way more than me as I’ve been battling some health things. The kids were ready to play,” Lorenzoni said.
“I could mention so many kids and their effort and their great play, but I don’t want to mention one because I’d be leaving eight others out. It was just a great team effort,” Lorenzoni said.
Kingsford (0-0-1) remains home as they host Houghton on Monday and Twin City rival Iron Mountain on Tuesday. The Flivvers will have a rematch with the Redettes on Thursday in Marquette.
Marquette 0 2 — 2
Kingsford 1 1 — 2
