Trio of Flivvers pitchers, LaVarnway stymie Negaunee, 8-2

QUINNESEC — Kingsford got out ot a 2-0 lead in the first inning and held the lead throughout as the Flivvers defeated Negaunee 8-2 in high school baseball here Tuesday afternoon.

Kingsford got on the board early, taking advantage of some early walks and an error by Negaunee.

“The first four runs of the game came off of zero hits, but patience at the plate proved to be the focus to get runners on and in scoring position for us,” said first-year Kingsford head coach Matt LaLonde.

The bats came alive in the fourth inning as Kingsford plated four runs, highlighted by a bases- loaded double from Nolan LaVarnway.

Andrew Paupore started the game for Kingsford, pitching three innings, giving up no hits, striking out three batters and walking three.

The combination of three pitchers — Paupore, Riley Juneau and Henry McRoberts– was strong, giving up a total of two hits while striking out five and giving four free passes.

At the plate, LaVarnway went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Nathan Bousley, Jack Bartolac and Zach Person each tallied a hit for the Flivvers.

“Overall it was solid game at the plate and a much better outing defensively,” LaLonde said. “We turned two unassisted double plays, which really helped our pitchers get out of some tough situations. My hats off to the performance of these young men tonight, they played with fire and emotion and that was nice to see.”

The Flivvers (1-1) travel to Menominee on Thursday, before returning home to host Marquette on Monday.
