Flivver boys dominate home Quint track meet
Short-handed Iron Mountain relay teams earn top placings throughout
KINGSFORD — Winning eight events, the Kingsford boys track team powered past the field in the Kingsford Quint at Flivver Field. The Flivvers compiled 128 points, 43 ahead of runner-up Negaunee in Thursday’s event.
Kingsford freshman Michael Floriano won the 100 and 200 meters. Diego Przeslakowski (300 hurdles), Brody Kopp (high jump), Cole Myllyla (long jump), Matthew Wilson (discuss) and Chris Carollo (400) each won events for Kingsford. The Flivvers also won the 1600 meter relay.
Iron Mountain boys finished fourth in the five-team event. The team of Caleb Evosevich-Hines, Joey Colavecchi, Joey Dumais and Dante Basanese won both the 800 and 400 meter relays.
“The boys were solid tonight with their relays, and we took three of the five places in the 100 meter dash,” said Mountaineers head track coach Karen Ellis. “We had a couple personal bests today as well. Overall I’m very pleased with how we did against such tough competition.”
On the girls side the Flivvers finished fourth and the Mountaineers placed fifth, with the teams finishing first and second in 800 meter relay. Anja Kleiman, Elle Lofholm, Emma Ellis and Natalia Brown of Iron Mountain were the winners of the 800 relay.
“We were missing quite a few kids tonight for various reasons. I was glad we were able to fill as many events as we did, because so many kids stepped up,” Ellis added. “We had subs in each of the girls relays, so to take a first, second, and a third was fantastic. Overall I’m very pleased with how we did against such tough competition.”
Emma Allen of Kingsford narrowly finished second in the 200 meters.
“I am happy to see improvements with each meet. We have to stay positive and just keep focusing on bettering our times and getting stronger,” said Kingsford girls track coach Lisa Harry. “Our seniors Emma Allen and Melanie Wenzel are awesome workers and leaders on and off the track and they have been working hard with the freshman and sophomores, showing them the way.”
The Flivvers return to action on Tuesday, as they host a quad with Norway, West Iron and Houghton. Iron Mountain travels to Gladstone for a quad meet on the same day.
