Flivver strikers kick past Houghton, 8-0

Malone records a hat trick, adds two assists

KINGSFORD — In their second game of the 2021 season, Kingsford’s girls soccer team took on Houghton on Monday evening at Commemorative Field in Kingsford. It was the host Flivvers shutting out the Lady Gremlins, 8-0.

Kingsford kept the play on Houghton’s end for most of the first half with little results.

“It felt like we had good chance after good chance, but it seemed like we were pressing a little, I’m not sure,” said Kingsford head coach Jon Lorenzoni.

Erika Malone broke the seal with a goal at the 19 minute mark off a pass from Christina Englund. “Christina really did some nice work to set that up,” Lorenzoni stated.

Malone scored another goal two minutes later and then assisted on Mila Henricksen’s goal 3 minutes after that. “Erika just works so hard, and Mila had a really nice game with her two goals and an assist,” Lorenzoni added.

The second half belonged to Kingsford, outplaying the visitors from the Copper Country.

“Houghton played hard. They lost their keeper (goalie) off a missile by Brooke Bittinger and I think they were deflated a little. Our midfield really was strong tonight controlling the play and keeping the ball on our attacking third. We can’t get too high though, as we have rival Iron Mountain to play next,” Lorenzoni said.

The Mountaineers and Flivvers will kick off at 5 p.m. this evening at Commemorative Field.
