Kingsford boys capture two relays at Negaunee

NEGAUNEE — The Marquette boys and girls track and field teams received an invitation and made sure to take advantage of it.

Both the Redmen and Redettes came out on top Friday at the Negaunee Lions Invitational, with the boys winning in convincing fashion with 131 points, well ahead of runner-up Gladstone with 81.5. Kingsford placed third at 55.

The Marquette girls had a little stiffer competition as they finished with 86 points, just ahead of Negaunee with 80 and Escanaba reaching 78. Kingsford’s girls placed sixth in the nine-team field with 18 points.

In the boys meet, the Redmen took first in two of the four relays — the 3,200-meter and 400 — with Kingsford winning the other two.

“The meet is what we expected — great competition,” said Kingsford coach Joe Kriegl. “Fun to see that much talent in the U.P. We’ve got some work to do to compete with the big dogs, but we are young and I like our chances down the road.”

Kam Karp won the 100 and 200 dashes for the Redmen.

Gladstone’s Blake Servant had arguably the best day of the all the boys by winning the 110 and 300 hurdles, the discus throw and long jump.

In the girls meet, the Redettes also won two relays — the 400 and 800 — with Escanaba taking the other two.
