Kingsford sweeps Redettes

MARQUETTE — Kingsford’s softball team swept a Great Northern Conference doubleheader here Thursday, defeating Marquette 19-2 and 19-4 in two shortened games.

“It was senior night and they graciously acknowledged our seniors in addition to their own with flowers and a card for each of ours. It was a special night for seniors even though it wasn’t at our home field,” said Kingsford head coach Cori Rice.

In the opener, Holly Richer pitched for the Flivvers. “Our girls hit well through the lineup and our defense was solid,” Rice stated. “Everyone contributed tonight.”

Freshman Ady Weber toed the mound for Kingsford in the second game and she was also 3-3 from the plate.

At Negaunee on Tuesday in non-conference action, the Lady Miners swept a doubleheader from Kingsford, 10-4 and 7-3.

In game one, senior Lizzy Cross belted a triple, while Allie LaVarnway hit a double for Kingsford. The Flivvers managed four hits in the contest.

In game two, Cross, Teagan Petschar and Kylie Mitchell each had two hits, with Petschar collecting two doubles. Mitchell drove in all three of the Flivvers runs in the nightcap.

Kingsford returns home to host GNC opponent Menominee on Monday, before hosting Twin City rival Iron Mountain on Thursday at Lodal Park.
