Norway stays close, falls to Esky

ESCANABA — Hunter Lancour and Brett Schlenvoght shared duties on the mound in a 5-0 shutout non-conference victory for the Escanaba Eskymos over the Norway Knights on Thursday n Escanaba.

“It’s good to have Hunter back,” said Eskymos’ coach Scott Hanson. “He had kind of a minor injury, so we rested him for a week and a half or two weeks. He threw really hard. He was up to, I think — they had a radar gun in the booth — he was at 84 I think. Not all the time, but he did hit 84. So, it’s good to see him back on track and he pitched awesome.”

Hanson kept Lancour under 60 pitches, purposefully, and pulled him after four innings. At that point, with five strikeouts and three walks, Lancour was throwing a no-hitter.

“When you pull a kid with a no-hitter going, people are probably wondering what the heck is going on,” said Hanson. “But, that was just to protect his arm.”

Schlenvoght struck out three and allowed three hits with no walks.

“Brett Schlenvoght came in and did a super job throwing strikes,” Hanson said. “He’s been really dependable coming off the bench and starting.”

Isaac Lorenzoni started for the Knights and threw two. He allowed one hit for three runs and had three walks.

Nolan Amundson toed the rubber the last four and fanned four Eskymos at the plate. He allowed four walks and one hit, with two runs crossing the plate.

None of the runs given up by the Knights were earned.

“I thought Isaac and Nolan, when they were in the strike zone, they didn’t get hurt at all today,” said Knights coach Tony Adams. “I’m proud of my pitchers. When they stayed in the strike zone, it was pretty much soft contact.”

Adams added that he was happy with how his young Knights team performed against the Eskymos.

“We brought a young team here today. A very young team. We made a few mistakes that hurt us and probably should, but I thought that we (played) pretty well today.

“Offensively, I knew we’d have trouble with (Lancour). But, all in all, to come to Escanaba and lose 5-0, we’re not satisfied, but we put a good foot forward today.”

The Knights gathered three hits which came off the bats of Amundson, Gannon Bray and Jesse Neumann.

The Eskymos had two hits with five batters reaching base on errors.

Colin Arnt and Matthew Zimmerman each connected at different points in the game.

Arnt had two stolen bases for the Eskymos. As a team, they stole six.

Also getting hits — and probably not in the way he would like — was Bryant Maki.

For the sixth game in a row, Maki was drilled by a pitch. In fact, he was hit twice.

That makes him seven for six. There was some talk amongst the Eskymos of this being some kind of record. An unofficial one, of course.

“He got hit in the exact same spot (elbow),” said Hanson. “I can only imagine what that feels like. So, I’m going to get a protective elbow pad this weekend for the team just in case we get in that situation again.”

Norway returns to action on Monday as they travel to Hermansville to take on Skyline Central Conference opponent North Central.

The Knights host non-conference foes Crivitz on Tuesday and Gladstone on Thursday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
