West Iron’s Thomson is medalist, Norway boys fifth at 10-team Negaunee Invitational

ISHPEMING — West Iron senior Nathan Thomson carded a 72 to take home medalist honors Tuesday at the Negaunee Kiwanis Invitational at Wawonowin Country Club in Ishpeming.

Norway finished fifth out of 10 teams, with a 375. The Knights were led by Carson Chartier with an 80, which was good for fifth overall.

The Knights’ Drew Anderson finished seventh with an 84, with teammate Jeffrey Van Holla carding an 86.

Gabe Celello of Iron Mountain shot a team-low 101 for the boys squad.

For the Mountaineers’ girls team, Reidet Husing carded a 108, which was good for third place overall. Husing, also on the Lady Mountaineers soccer team, competed on the golf team for the first time this season in the Kiwanis event.

The Mountaineer girls finished third with a 490. Lily Verrette carded a 116 for seventh place. Natalia Brown shot a 120, and Lulu McCash carded a 146.

Individually, West Iron’s Madison Berutti shot a 108, placing fourth overall. Negaunee’s Rachel Niskanen shot a 94 for medalist on the girls side.

The Mountaineers will be in a quad meet at Pine Grove Country Club on Monday, hosted by Kingsford. West Iron will compete at the Hancock Invitational on Thursday at Portage Lake Golf course in Houghton.

The Knights’ next action is Tuesday in the Range Bank Invitational at Wawonowin Country Club hosted by Negaunee. The Wykons and Mountaineers will also play Tuesday at Wawonowin.

Bobcats compete

LAONA, Wis. — Florence’s boys golf team competed in a Northern Lakes Conference meet, hosted by Laona-Wabeno at Nicolet Country Club in Laona on Tuesday afternoon. The Bobcats finished fourth out of five teams.

Matt Johnson and Dominic DeMuri each cared a 52, while Tyler Neihaus shot a 61. Brock Taff shot a 62 for the Bobcats and Dominic Axley rounded out the Florence lineup with a 64.

Jordan Wallschlaeger of Pembine was the lone competitor for the Panthers, and he shot an 82.

Reed Christianson of L-W was medalist with a 38.
