West Iron’s Thomson named West PAC golf Player of the Year

IRON MOUNTAIN -- West Iron senior Nathan Thomson was named Wes PAC Conference boys golf player of the year Wednesday at the conference championship meet at Timberstone Golf Course.

Thomson was medalist with a 74 in the event, edging Tyler Annala of Westwood, who carded a 76. Team champions on the boys side are Houghton, with their coach Corey Markham tabbed as conference coach of the year.

Iron Mountain's Joey Colavecchi was team-low for the Mountaineers with an 87. Ricky Brown shot an 88, while Brett Ramme posted a 99, Sam Yake carded a 122 and Austin LaFave shot a 126.

The Wykons had three other golfers compete. Dale Kemppainen shot a 92, followed by Brennan Horton with a 107 and Justyn Lambert at 140.

On the girls side, Westwood was crowned conference champions, with their coach Marc Nutini named coach of the year. Rachel Niskanen of Negaunee was named girls player of the year.

Niskanen was medalist with a 93, while Jillian Koski of Westwood was runner-up with a 109.

West Iron had three girls compete on Tuesday, with Kya Dallavalle carding a team-low 126. Madison Berutti shot a 131 and Harlie Mellstrom shot a 178.

The Mountaineer girls had two golfers compete, with Rediet Husing coming in with a 118, which was fourth place overall. Natalia Brown of Iron Mountain finished seventh with a 124.

The Wykons host an invitational at George Young Golf Course today, with Iron Mountain, Forest Park, Houghton, Ironwood, North Central, Stephenson, Watersmeet, Westwood, Calumet and Hancock scheduled to compete.
