Florence’s Liebergen, West tabbed with gridiron accolades

CORBIN WEST

FLORENCE, Wis. — Two Florence High School seniors have received Wisconsin Football Coaches Association honors for the 2020 season.

William Liebergen, a two-way starter at defensive end and running back and a two-year team captain, has been named to the WFCA academic all-state team. Liebergen is the valedictorian of his senior class with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

“William was a leader in the classroom, a leader in the weight room and locker room, and a leader on the field,” said Bobcats head coach Kent Walstrom. “He lost part of an already shortened season to injury so I wasn’t able to nominate him for any post-season conference awards, but when healthy he was a first-team caliber defensive end and a power runner that was a good blocking back. He was even our emergency quarterback, so he’ll be tough to replace in a lot of ways. But his dedication to his school and team and his leadership qualities and work ethic are off the charts. He’s a special, special young man.”

Corbin West, selected by conference coaches for first-team all-conference honors at four positions — wide receiver, defensive back, kicker and punter — has been selected to play in the WFCA 8-Player All-Star game this summer. West broke four school records his senior season, including longest punt from scrimmage, 87 yards, pass reception yards in a game,191, career receiving yards, 642, and average yards per reception in a season at 30.6.

“Six foot-three, can run and jump really well, is smart, and has reliable hands. These are newer 8-player football records that he broke, but they were held by three different players who came before him that were also state all-star and all-conference selections. He has some natural gifts you can’t teach, and he put it all together last year,” Walstrom added. “On defense he was a matchup player we could put on the other team’s best receiver, and our kickoff and punt team units were dominant in part because of Corbin. He was a standout amongst a very talented group of seniors we’re going to have to work very hard to try to replace next season.”
