ST. IGNACE — Despite a game-high 35 points –21 from behind the three-point arc — from Menominee’s Emma Anderson, the East All-Stars defeated the West, 87-80, Saturday morning in the 35th annual U.P. Sports Hall of Fame U.P. All-Star Basketball Classic at LaSalle High School in St. Ignace.

The East squad’s Megan Crow of Gladstone was named game MVP, netting a team-high 21 points. Crow, a Grand Valley State University recruit and a 2020 and 2021 All-U.P. First Team selection by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters, snared double figures in rebounds and blocked a handful of shots.

With it being an all-star game, stats other than points weren’t taken. The game was played in a college format, with four 10-minute quarters and using a 30-second shot clock.

It was competitive game throughout, with many of the players being familiar with one another from both on and off the court, which made for a great atmosphere.

The East had four other players join Crow in double figures in scoring. Jordan Haller of Sault Ste. Marie canned 16 points, while her teammate Lilly Alaspa chipped in 11 points. Chesney Molina of Rudyard and Hallie Marshal of St. Ignace each drained 10 points for the East.

“I feel very privileged and blessed to have been asked to coach this game,” East head coach Carlos Molina of Rudyard said. “Not only because of the fact that coaching an all-star game is a true honor but also getting to do so with my daughter on the team in her last high school game was special for me.”

Both Anderson, who is a Wayne State University recruit and the 2020 U.P. Miss Basketball award winner, as well as Crow were in double figures in scoring at halftime, as the East held a one-point lead at the intermission. At halftime, Marshall won the girls 3-point shootout, defeating Erin Barrette of Menominee in the finals.

In the third quarter, the East poured in 31 points, led by Crow with nine. Anderson had 13 of the West’s 20 points in the quarter.

“It was a great experience, coaching some of the best senior basketball players in the U.P. There was quite a bit of talent on the floor throughout the whole game. Not only outstanding athletes, they are great kids as well,” said West head coach Eric Shamion of West Iron. “It was also special for me as a dad to watch my daughter play her last game as an All-Star. Thanks to everyone who helped organize this wonderful event.”

The Wykons’ Jordan Shamion was on the West roster coached by her father, Eric, netting two points in the contest. Andie Arsenault of North Central chipped in eight points in the game, also winning the girls free-throw shooting contest.

Miss U.P. Basketball of 2021, Nicole Kamin, who will join Crow at GVSU this fall also as a women’s basketball recruit at Grand Valley, was on the East roster, scoring eight points in the contest.
