Kingsford slips past Norway, 6-5, in 9-10 Little League All-Star baseball

NORWAY — A five-run second inning fueled by Norway errors ended up being the difference as Kingsford’s 9-10 year-old Little League All-Stars defeated Norway 6-5 on Thursday evening in a Michigan District 10 pre-district game at Marion Park in Norway.

The five Kingsford runs in the top half of inning No. 2 came off of three walks, to go along with three Norway miscues, all while Kingsford didn’t get any hits in the inning.

“It was nice to take the lead by three runs early in the game like that,” said Kingsford head coach Ed McCoy. “As the game goes along, we have to make sure everyone gets an at bat, and keeping track of pitch-count and all the other rules that go along with it, that’s the hardest part. To make sure we make the right adjustments.”

Kingsford pitchers Logan McCoy and Dawson Hood combined for 13 strikeouts and only four hits, while walking eight.

“We had confidence in both of our pitchers we used tonight,” McCoy said. “Norway was the team to beat in our opinion, so it’s nice to get this one tonight.”

Norway had taken an early 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the opening inning, off of a pair of RBI singles. The first one was by Colton Lord, the second by Tristan Lessor.

Kingsford added an insurance run to take a 6-2 lead in the top half of the third inning as a Norway throwing error followed a double by Jake Fredrickson.

Norway’s Tucker Buchanan relieved starting pitcher Tyler Sternhagen about the mid-way point of the game. Sternhagen fanned eight batters, walked four and allowed only one hit.

Buchanan struck out four while not allowing a run, on two hits and no walks.

“We hit the ball well, we didn’t get any timely hits and left too many runners on base,” said Norway head coach Scott Sternhagen. “Kingsford threw strikes, hats off to their pitchers and team. We also made mistakes on the bases that cost us.”

Kingsford will face Iron Mountain this evening at 5 p.m. at Marion Park, with the winner advancing to the district round as the No. 1 seed.

Norway will play the loser of this evening’s game at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The winner of the 1 p.m. loser’s bracket game will move on to district play as the No. 2 seed from the area.
