NORWAY — The Norway All-Stars threw a combined no-hitter — their second no-hitter in as many days — to beat the Escanaba All-Stars 13-0 in a 9-10 Little League All-Stars district semifinal at Marion Park in Norway.
Tyler Sternhagen started and pitched through 2 2/3, with Jaxson Walker finishing.
“We got the flip today, so we were the home team, and our starting pitcher Tyler came out and got the team jacked up,” said Norway coach Scott Sternhagen. “He went one, two, three with three strikeouts. The bats were hitting a little bit in the first, and then we came back out. And he struck out three in a row in the second. Then the second inning, the bats just started going.”
Leading off things for Norway in the second was Hunter Langin, who started the inning with a triple. The hit swung the momentum in Norway’s favor as they scored six runs in the inning to make it 8-0.
“With the bats, it was everybody,” said coach Sternhagen. “Hunter Langin was swinging the bat good. Tucker Buchanan, Dylan Erickson, all three of them really swung the bat well tonight.”
Tyler Sterngagen recorded two outs in the third before Walker took over pitching. The first was a strikeout while he tagged out Brody Steinhauer on his way to first for the second out.
“Jaxson Walker came in and got the last four outs for us, and we didn’t give up a hit,” coach Sternhagen said. “That’s back-to-back no-hitters for us, two nights in a row.”
For Escanaba, the challenges presented by both Norway pitchers were difficult to overcome.
“We had a hard time hitting their pitcher(s),” said Escanaba coach Jude VanDamme. “Give them credit. They’ve got a good team, and we wish them the best of luck.”
While Esky’s bats were silent, the kids did make some solid snags on defense.
Blake Gagnon made a nice grab for the third out in the first inning, while Alex Irving had a leaping catch on a line drive for the final out in the bottom of the third.
Nolan VanDamme started for Escanaba toeing the rubber, with Jayce Braun closing.
Overall, coach VanDamme said the year went well.
“We had a good season,” he said. “We were together, a lot of us, since April. I think they came a long way. They worked hard and really showed a lot of improvement.
Despite the score, the Escanaba team showed little sign of giving up.
“That relates directly to the coaching staff and how we won’t let them quit and try to be positive,” said coach VanDamme. “You work hard in practice, and then when you get in the game, it’s all about encouragement … and that’s one thing we kept preaching all year was just keep your head up and keep working hard. If you make a mistake, you just have to learn to shake it off because you’re going to make mistakes, and you got to learn to just shake it off.
“I’m proud of the way they played. I’m just sorry we couldn’t do a little bit better.”
Norway will take on Kingsford today for the district championship at 5:30 p.m. at Marion Park. If Norway wins, there will be a winner-take-all game to determine the District champion on Thursday, also at 5:30 p.m.
