Wykon netters eke past Iron Mountain, 5-3

STAMBAUGH — After splitting the singles matches at 2-2, West Iron County won 3-of-4 of the doubles flights, as they slipped past non-conference foe Iron Mountain, 5-3 in girls tennis action Monday afternoon at the Nelson Field tennis courts.

“This was a tough match with lots of really close contested sets. I was happy with our No. 1 doubles team and their ability to pull away at the ends of their sets,” said veteran West Iron tennis coach Joe Serbentas. “Madison (Berutti) has been improving on her down the line shots while Aubrey (Bice) has complemented her well with her lobs and ground strokes.”

The Wykons, 4-1 (2-0 GNC) have a busy week ahead of them schedule wise, as they entertain non-conference opponent Westwood this afternoon, before traveling to Great Northern Conference foe Marquette on Wednesday, and welcoming Gladstone to Nelson Field on Thursday.

“Brynlee (Nodurft) at No. 3 singles secured the victory for us with a very solid second set after a tight first one. Kali (Applin) is starting to get back to form after missing her first week of tennis matches.

Iron Mountain will travel to Marquette today for non-conference action, before entertaining West PAC and Mid-Peninsula Conference foe Gwinn on Thursday.

“Despite coming up a bit short today, we took some major steps forward. We haven’t played a match in nearly two weeks, so I’m proud of the way the girls performed,” said second year IM girls tennis coach Marcus Celello.

Aziza Burgoon had a marathon 3-set match, and after a tough second set, she came out aggressive and closed the door in the third. Elle Lofholm battled back strongly after dropping her first set, and she came away with a hard-fought win. Up and down the lineup, I’m proud of the girls’ effort today,” Celello added.
