Iron Mountain’s Burgoon captures conference tennis title

Mountaineers place 3rd at Mid-Peninsula meet

WEST ISHPEMING — Iron Mountain senior Aziza Burgoon took home the No. 2 singles title as the Mountaineers finished third overall in the 2021 Mid-Peninsula girls tennis championships Thursday at Westwood High School in West Ishpeming.

Negaunee captured the team championship in the event.

Burgoon defeated Negaunee’s Daylynn Drew in the finals: 6-1, 6-2.

“I’m extremely proud of the way the girls played today. We were competitive in every flight, including several third-place finishes, as well as Aziza Burgoon’s first-place finish,” said Iron Mountain girls tennis coach Marcus Celello.

“In the finals, Aziza played perhaps her best match of the season. She controlled the pace of play, and she showed great poise throughout the match. She’s having an incredible season, and I couldn’t possibly be more proud of her,” Celello said.

Iron Mountain got third place finishes at No. 1 doubles-Bella Brown/Anja Kleiman; No. 2 doubles, Danika Juul/Rediet Husing, No. 4 doubles, Hailey Greenleaf/Mia Vedin; and at No. 3 singles, Natalia Brown.

The Lady Miners finished with 42 points, followed by host Westwood with 35 and the Mountaineers with 24. Ishpeming was next with 17 and rounding out the standings was Gwinn with 10 points.

Iron Mountain returns to action on Monday when they host non-conference foe Escanaba.
