KINGSFORD — The second rivalry game in a six-day span didn’t disappoint as Kingsford hosted Iron Mountain in boys soccer. The teams battled to a 1-1 tie Monday night at Commemorative Field in Kingsford.

After a highly competitive and cleanly played game, the teams left the field with one another as many of are friends, growing up in such close proximity.

The Mountaineers were missing eight players for the game, due to varying reasons, as well as head coach Joe Pacheco. Despite being short-handed, Iron Mountain played hard in the contest.

After a scoreless first half, it took over 32 minutes before Kingsford got on the scoreboard. With 7:27 remaining in the game, Kingsford freshman Jaxon Buckley was knocked to the ground near the goal by a Mountaineers defender.

Two of the three game officials had a brief discussion, and called a roughing penalty on Iron Mountain, giving Buckley a penalty kick, which he blasted into the net to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

The crowd, as well as the loud and energetic Mountaineers student section, stayed entertained the last seven minutes of the game. Both teams played hard, with the Mountaineers working for a game-tying goal.

With a mere 1:20 remaining, Iron Mountain worked the ball past the Flivvers defense. As a cross pass came sailing in towards Kingsford net minder Ethan Gribble, Iron Mountain’s Parker Stroud leapt into the air and headed the ball towards the net.

“I don’t know where that cross pass came from, but Parker made a great play on the ball and it went in,” said Iron Mountain assistant coach Greg Kulas. “Tonight was one of the best played Iron Mountain-Kingsford soccer games that I can ever remember.”

The ball went into the right corner of the net, slightly out of the reach of Gribble’s outstretched hands. At that point, the Mountaineers settled for keeping the ball off of their end of the field, to end the game in a tie.

“Our defense played fantastic tonight,” said Kingford head coach Jeff Gordon. “We dominated time of possession in the game, and got off a whole lot of shots, but we didn’t hit the net obviously. But the boys played hard, both teams did, and it was a competitive game.”

Both teams return to action today, as Iron Mountain remains home to host Marquette. Kingsford will travel to Three Lakes, Wis.

“Our goalie was excellent tonight. Tyler (Winch) got a workout, that’s for sure,” Kulas added. “Our defense helped him out at times, too, but he did great. How we kept Kingsford down to only one goal, I have no idea. Especially as determined as they were after we beat them last week.”

On Saturday in Minocqua, Wis., at Lakeland High School the Flivvers played U.P. foe Marquette as well as Amherst, Wis. The Redmen shut out the Flivvers 4-0, while Kingsford mercy-ruled Amherst, 10-0.

“The Marquette game was 1-0 at halftime, but we got wore down, with only 13 players with us on Saturday,” Gordon said.
