North Central, Marquette stay atop UP grid poll

NEGAUNEE — For the third week in a row, the No. 1 team in each poll was a unanimous selection as the third Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters U.P. Football poll of the 2021 season was released on Monday.

Undefeated and defending MHSAA Division 2 8-player state champion North Central remains the No. 1 team on the 8-player side. The Jets are also the No. 1-ranked team in the state in this week’s AP Prep State Football Poll in all of 8-player.

Marquette remains the No. 1 ranked 11-player team in the U.P. with the Kingsford Flivvers remaining No. 2. Sault Ste. Marie moved up to No. 3 this week and the Westwood Patriots climbed to No. 4.

Negaunee appears in the poll for the first time this season, as the Miners and head coach Paul Jacobson come in at No. 5. Menominee, who lost to Denmark, Wis., 41-7, dropped out of this week’s top five, but did receive votes.

The 4-0 Forest Park Trojans, who came in at No. 3 in the 8-player poll last week, moved up one spot after a road win at Norway on Friday night. The Trojans are ranked No. 8 in the AP 8-player state poll this week, also moving up one spot for the second straight week.

Norway, 3-2, received votes from the voting panel in both the UPSSA poll and the AP State Poll.

The UPSSA’s five-voter panel for the 2021 football season is: Jason Juno, Ironwood Daily Globe; Rob Roos of the Sault Evening News; John Vrancic of the Escanaba Daily Press; Mike Ludlum of WLUC-TV6 and Matt “Sweets” McCarthy of the Iron Mountain Daily News.
