STAMBAUGH — West Iron playing in their second match in as many days, powered past non-conference foe Ironwood, 7-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Nelson Field Tennis Courts. West Iron improves to 7-4-1 on the season, with a 2-2-1 record in the Great Northern Conference.

“We are steadily becoming more consistent on groundstrokes in singles and it is showing in the scores of our last two matches. The singles players are learning how to manipulate a point with placement and approaching the net,” said veteran West Iron head girls tennis coach Joe Serbentas. “Our doubles teams are fighting hard but still need some fine tuning on net play and return serves. All in all it was a good day.”

At Menominee on Monday, West Iron and Menominee played to a 4-4 draw in Great Northern Conference play.

West Iron swept the singles matches while the Maroons won all four doubles events.

“This was a very close match that came down to two three-setters,” said Serbentas. “Brynlee (Nodurft) was able to edge her opponent in the third set tiebreak to help us sweep the singles flights.”

On the flip side, the West Iron No. 2 doubles team of Lillie Schmutzler and Callista Bortolameoilli lost a tightly contested tiebreak.

The Wykons remain home to host non-conference opponent Gwinn on Thursday, before traveling to Norway on Monday for another non–conference match.
