Flivvers fall to unbeaten Luxemburg-Casco

KINGSFORD — A balanced offense, steady defense and control of the line of scrimmage powered undefeated Luxemburg-Casco past host Kingsford 35-6 in a non-conference game on Homecoming at Flivver Field on Friday night.

The visiting Spartans showed multiple weapons on offense and applied significant defensive pressure at times to Flivvers quarterback Michael Meneguzzo.

Kingsford opened the game receiving the football and minutes later middle linebacker Samuel Peterson of Luxemburg-Casco intercepted Meneguzzo and returned it for a 23-yard touchdown. A successful extra point kick put the Spartans ahead 7-0.

“We came out and laid an egg tonight,” said Flivvers head coach Mark Novara. “We gave them seven points right off the bat with an interception and things went down hill from there. The bottom line is we have to play better than this against teams like this. We had a big crowd tonight and the bright lights of a big game and I am very disappointed by our overall performance.”

Kingsford did move the ball at times, but the Spartans defense didn’t allow any big plays. The exception was a 39-yard run on 2nd and 6 from junior running back Cole Myllyla on the team’s lone scoring drive.

Myllyla’s run and a L-C pass interference penalty inside the 10-yard line set up Kingsford with the ball at the Spartans’ 5. Diego Przeslakowski found the left corner of the north end zone to trim the visiting team’s lead to 14-6 — but that’s as close as the Flivvers got.

Luxemburg-Casco senior running back Isaac VandenBush reached paydirt twice in the second half, for his 25th and 26th touchdowns of the season. The shifty back also carried the ball with power, despite the Flivvers keying on him.

Luxemburg-Casco offensive coordinator Greg Klaubuf reported that VandenBush is the school record-holder for career rushing touchdowns, despite having not played the running back position as a jayvee player.

Spartans quarterback Owen Deprez, who had brilliant protection for most of the contest, played with poise. The southpaw completed the majority of his passes, including a 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end Logan Doell.

On their second drive of the third quarter, Deprez threw a sideline pass to sophomore Max Ronsman who stopped, and threw a pass to fellow wingback Ryan Routhieaux for a 40-yard gain.

Spartans head coach Neil Seering was pleased with his team’s performance.

“We like to use our players to the best of their abilities. We have a solid offensive line, we have good skill players and we have depth at many positions,” Seering said. “We like to have teams feel they need to cover us from sideline to sideline, while keeping things simple and having a good balance.”

Deprez intercepted a pass late in the game, while teammate Trace Schoenebeck recovered a fumble for the Spartans on the second play of the Flivvers’ second drive.

The Flivvers, who fall to 4-2 on the season, return to action Friday night as they travel to Wrightstown, Wis., for a non-conference game.

“Wrightstown will be another challenge for us. They’re good year after year, we need to play better against them than we did tonight, Novara added.
