Gremlins foil IM in volleyball, 3-2
HOUGHTON — In a West PAC Conference volleyball dual here Tuesday night, the host Lady Gremlins defeated Iron Mountain, 3-2 (25-14, 21-25, 25-17, 19-25, 15-13).
“The last set of the match, neither team lead by more than a two-point lead throughout the set, with multiple long rallies,” said veteran Iron Mountain head coach Jeanne Newberry.
“The first set, we came out on our heels adjusting to Houghton’s game plan. In the second set, we came out with strong serving to take a lead and kept it. Entering into the third set, we needed to make some adjustments to the middle, with placement of the ball over our front row,” Newberry added.
The Mountaineers won the fourth set, forcing the final fifth set tiebreaker, which is played to 15 points. The Gremlins also won the jayvee and freshmen matches, 2-0 on the night.
Iron Mountain returns to West Pac Conference action tonight, as they travel to West Iron. Both the Mountaineers and Wykons will head to Hancock and Houghton High school’s for Saturday’s West PAC Conference tournament.
