Norway rolls over Nordics in ‘opener’

FELCH TOWNSHIP -- The Norway boys basketball team had to wait until mid-December to play its first game, but the Knights made up for the delay with a 65-23 victory over North Dickinson in a Skyline Central Conference contest Wednesday in Felch.

The teams had been scheduled to play on Dec. 6, but the game was postponed by poor weather.

Eleven Norway players scored in the game, led by Michael Peterson's 13 points. Tyler Neuens added nine points and Alex Ortman added eight.

"Early season basketball to start the game for both teams," Norway coach Jeff Gallino said. "Once we settled in, I thought we moved the ball around better and were able to get some easy buckets against their zone."

The Knights took an 11-3 lead after the first quarter and lengthened that to 27-12 at intermission. Norway then outscored the Nordics 38-11 over the final 16 minutes.

"Our help defense and communication improved in the second half," Gallino said.

The Nordics were led by Steven Holmes, who scored 10 points. North Dickinson, playing again without injured senior and last year's leading scorer Maximum Mattson, managed just six made field goals in the game.

Overall, the Nordic shot 6 of 40 (12.5%) in the loss.

"Obviously, we got blasted," said North Dickinson coach Chris Mattson. "Hats off to Norway. Their length was problematic for us."
