CRYSTAL FALLS -- The Forest Park varsity boys basketball team exploded out of the gate Thursday against Rapid River, but the Rockets never gave in and eventually defeated the Trojans 70-62 in overtime in a Skyline Central Conference clash at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium.
The Trojans (2-1, 1-1) grabbed a 23-11 lead heading into the second quarter and took a 36-26 advantage into intermission. The Rockets pulled to within eight after three and then made their move in the fourth by outscoring Forest Park 20-12 to force the overtime.
By then, Rapid River held all the momentum and notched the win going away.
"I give Rapid River a lot of credit," said Jason Price, who suffered his initial loss as Forest Park's head coach. "They did not quit and made big plays down the stretch. We led the whole game and let one slip away. It was a tough loss, but both players and myself learned a lot."
Rapid River finished with five players in double figures, led by Ian Sundling's 17.
Sophomore Gaven Rintala, who buried six 3-pointers, paced Forest Park with 20 points. Felix Quevedo added 11 points, while Sam McKissack and Kevin Giuliani posted 10 points each for the Trojans.
Both teams got significant production from beyond the 3-point arc. Rapid River hit nine triples and the Trojans connected on eight.
