Wykons hold off Mountaineers 50-47

IRON RIVER — Sophomore Danica Shamion scored 19 points and hauled down 13 rebounds as West Iron County held off Iron Mountain 50-47 in a West Pac Conference game on Tuesday at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium in Iron River.

“It was a hard-fought game tonight from both teams,” WIC coach Eric Shamion said. “Our kids, who don’t have much varsity experience, found a way to get a win. It wasn’t pretty but it will help with our confidence as we move into the season.”

The Wykons (1-1, 1-1) slowly built a 36-28 lead

Wolves stop Trojans 67-32

CARNEY — Senior center Tessa Wagner hit 14 of 19 shots and added seven rebounds and seven blocks to power Carney-Nadeau past Forest Park 67-32 in a Skyline Central Conference game Tuesday at Carney-Nadeau High School.

“We struggled to stop Wagner inside,” Forest Park coach Kim Bjork said. “She gets good position and doesn’t miss inside.”

The Wolves took control early, leading 20-2 after the first quarter. The Lady Trojans (1-2, 1-2) stayed with their hosts in the second quarter but trailed 33-14 at the break.

“Our girls made some in-game adjustments and tried to push the ball up the floor when we had opportunities,” Bjork said. “We definitely have a lot to work on, but our girls are determined.”

Senior center Gracie Peterson paced Forest Park with nine points and freshman Lilly Post added seven.

Shae Linder tallied 14 points and Grace Maule chipped in with 13 for the Wolves.

Ladycats muster a 51-43 win

FLORENCE — Isabella Millan recorded a double-double with 32 points and 10 rebounds to help Florence defeat Northland Pines 51-43 in a non-conference game in Florence.

Florence coach Brad Perry said the game was stuck in the mud for most of the night.

“Both teams had snow days yesterday and it showed. It was 2-1 after the first eight minutes. It wasn’t pretty but it’s about finding a way to win and we did that.”

The Ladycats settled in a bit after the sluggish start, keyed by some steals and layups.

Perry said the final six minutes turned into a parade to the foul line, but he was happy to leave with the win.
