FELCH -- The Kingsford Flivvers grabbed a late lead and then held off a flurry of shots by North Dickinson to defeat the Nordics 42-41 in a non-conference girls basketball game on Tuesday night at Felch.
With the win, the Flivvers (5-5) earned a season split with North Dickinson (7-4).
The two squads battled back-and-forth all game long as both coaches credited the players for their competitiveness and effort.
"It was a heck of a game," Flivvers' coach Jon Lorenzoni said. "(We) would separate and take a seemingly comfortable lead and ND would fight their way back."
"I thought it was a pretty evenly matched game and both teams worked their butts off on defense and moved the ball well on offense," Nordics coach Kirk Mattson added.
Kingsford senior Abby Terrian scored seven points in the first quarter to spark the Flivvers to a 14-7 edge entering the second quarter. North Dickinson senior Ashton Hord responded with six points in the second as her team pulled to within 22-20 at the break.
The teams continued their battle in the second half as Kingsford led 32-27 after three before the game went down to the wire in the fourth.
"Overall, I'm happy with our effort," Mattson said. "We played much better offensively than we did against Norway (a 40-38 overtime loss on Jan. 21). We played with a little more urgency."
"These are good tests," Lorenzoni added. "Our entire team played hard."
Terrian led all scorers with 15, while Talia Wallis added nine for the Flivvers.
Hord and Chrislyn recorded 12 points each for the Nordics.
Wykon offense comes alive
IRON RIVER -- The West Iron County girls varsity basketball team played its best offensive game of the season and sped past visiting Norway 55-32 on Tuesday night at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium in Iron River.
West Iron (3-8) took a quick nine-point lead after the first quarter and extended that to 29-16 by halftime.
The Knights could never get back in the ballgame in the second half and dropped their sixth game in 12 outings.
"We played a good game overall," Wykon coach Eric Shamion said. "We were able to execute the offense and get some easy buckets."
The coach's daughter, Danica Shamion, tied her season high with 22 points, while fellow guard Kali Harty scored 12 points in support.
"Harty played well on both ends of the floor," Coach Shamion said.
Andi Carlson was the only Norway player to hit double figures as she registered 16 points. Hannah Burklund chipped in with seven.
West Iron sank five 3-pointers with Harty and Shamion hitting two and Adi Franzene the other. The Knights did not hit a shot from 3-point distance in the contest.
