KINGSFORD -- Coming off an intense win over rival Iron Mountain on Tuesday, the UPSSA Division 1-3 No. 3 ranked Kingsford Flivvers showed no signs of let-up as they scored 28 points in the opening quarter and went on to 76-16 non-conference victory over visiting North Dickinson on Thursday.

Nic Nora scored nine points, Ben Trevillian posted eight and Brody Kopp added seven during Kingsford's first-quarter blitz. The Flivvers, who have won six straight, scored 22 more in the second quarter to go up 50-15 at halftime of the boys varsity matchup.

"We were able to jump out to an early lead in the first quarter after applying some full-court pressure," Kingsford coach Dan Olkkonen said. "We did a nice job sharing the ball in our offense creating a lot of open shots. We got everyone some good minutes."

Eleven players, including three junior varsity members, scored in the game for Kingsford (7-1). Nora led the way with 15, Kopp added 13 and Trevillian chipped in with 10.

Sophomore Wyatt Glasheen scored 10 points for the Nordics (0-9). Glasheen scored all eight of his team's points in the first quarter.

"It was nice to see him breakout of sort of a shooting slump," North Dickinson coach Chris Mattson said of Glasheen.

The Nordics' season-long struggle to score continued, however. Through nine games, North Dickinson is averaging only 26.2 points per game.

"We played a decent first half for us, we just got overwhelmed in the second half," Mattson said of his injury-plagued team.

"Our kids fought hard," he added. "(But) we have to be able to score the ball better."

No. 2 Houghton jumps on Wykons

IRON RIVER -- The UPSSA Division 1-3 No.2 ranked Houghton Gremlins leapt to a 24-8 lead after the first quarter en route to their 73-47 West Pac Conference girls basketball victory over West Iron County Thursday at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium in Iron River.

Houghton, coming off a 66-49 defeat at top-ranked Calumet on Tuesday, won for the 11th time in 12 games.

Stella Wickstrom scored eight of her 16 points in the first quarter to get Houghton started.

"We struggled with their quick transition game," West Iron coach Eric Shamion said. "Our girls battled but they were just too much for us tonight."

The Wykons (2-8) had a productive second half offensively, scoring 29 points.

Danica Shamion led West Iron with 17 points while Kali Harty scored a career-high 14 points for the Wykons. Harty's output was the first time someone other than Shamion has scored in double figures for West Iron.

NIAGARA, Wis. -- The Niagara girls varsity basketball team has recently alternated wins and losses over its last six games now, including Thursday night's 40-30 setback to Coleman in a M&O Conference contest at Niagara High School.
