KINGSFORD — Kingsford senior Toby Wilcox had a memorable day at the Kingsford Invitational on Saturday, not only winning his 100th career match but also walking away with the Most Valuable Wrestler award at the multi-team event.
Wilcox captured the championship at 145 pounds, wrestling down from 152. Some of the lineups were changed during the invitational because Westwood and Negaunee were unable to participate as scheduled with COVID-19 issues.
Wilcox was one of four Kingsford wrestlers to take win championships during the day. Others included Josh Peterson at 171, Izayah Reed at 152 and Elizin Rouse at 215.
“We had a really good day,” Kingsford coach Darren Groleau said. “We finished the day strong.”
Of course, Wilcox stood out with his accomplishments.

Wilcox won his first match of the day and went on to capture the title at 145 pounds. For his performances, Wilcox was selected as the invitational’s Most Valuable Wrestler.
“To get 100 wins in a career is huge for any wrestler,” Groleau said. “Now, he’s with some of the big names in our school’s history. It’s awesome, he’s put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it and he went out there and accomplished (the 100 wins.)”
Groleau said Peterson got a measure of revenge on Iron Mountain’s Fulton Stroud at 171. Peterson lost to Stroud the previous time they wrestled.
“He made no excuses about losing the match last weekend and he did what he needed to do which was great,” Groleau said.
Reed captured the 152-pound weight class, which was left wide open by Iron Mountain standout Parker Stroud’s absence. Reed finished 5-1 on the day and defeated teammate Aiden Smith in the final.
Rouse pinned his three opponents to win at 215.

Iron Mountain won the team standings, finishing with 161.5. Next up was Kingsford at 153, followed by Ishpeming (103), Marquette (101), Bark River-Harris (55), Munising (49.5), Florence (49.5), Menominee (27) and Gwinn (12).
Iron Mountain weight-class winners included Alex Wilson at 103/112 and Shawn McGuire at 119/125.
“Just happy we got a chance to wrestle this weekend,” Iron Mountain coach Cory McLaren said. “The way things were going, (I) thought we might have to cancel. Kingsford did a good job to change this to round robin/scramble and that made for a good meet.
Florence was led by Sophia Wagner and Breyson Kelley. Wagner took second after moving up from 103 to 112. She finished the day with a 3-1 mark.
Breyson Kelley also captured second place at 160, falling to Marquette’s Wyatt Kuhlman in the final.
“Kuhlman was dominating everyone at Kingsford, pinning everyone to make it to the finals,” Florence coach Ed Kelley said. “(Breyson) was able to stay in the match (eventually losing 14-6) but with Kuhlman being the senior, his experience ended up being the factor ….”
Caitlyn Kelley took fourth place, moving up a weight class from 119 lbs to 125 lbs.
“Caitlyn won her first match of the day,” Coach Kelley said. “She noted the huge strength disadvantage and it was decided to hold off on wrestling for the rest of the day to avoid any injuries as she prepares for the WIAA girls state championships in a couple of weeks.”
Next up for the Michigan wrestlers are the U.P. finals on Saturday in Marquette.
