Wrestling: Flivvers tie school record
GRAYLING — The Kingsford wrestling team tied a school record by sending three Flivvers to the MHSAA Individual Wrestling Finals after their performances at the Division III Grayling Regional on Saturday.
Toby Wilcox (third at 145 pounds), Josh Peterson (third at 171) and Matthew Wilson (fourth at heavyweight) will compete in the pinnacle event, which will be held on March 4-5 at Ford Field in Detroit.
“It was an awesome day for us,” said coach Darren Groleau, who said the last time the team sent three to the finals was when he was on the squad in 2009. “We had an amazing showing.”
Wilcox, a senior who entered the regional with a 31-4 record, scored a pin to start his day then came up against undefeated Cody Ueberroth of Saginaw Swan Valley, who beat Wilcox 7-5 in the semifinals. Ueberroth went on to win the regional title at 145.
“That kid hasn’t been challenged all year and it was the best match he’s had this year,” Groleau said of the Ueberroth’s matchup with Wilcox.
After the setback, Wilcox pinned Kyle Campbell of Gladwin at 4:32 and then finished off his day with a pin at 4:46 in the third-place match.
Peterson, a junior who entered the regional with a 36-7 record, scored a pin in 40 seconds over two-time state qualifier Cody Smith of Montrose in his opening match before being pinned by eventual champion Randy Pyrzewski of Gladwin in his next.
From there, Peterson won out. He scored a 6-3 decision in his next match and then pinned Kaden Patterson of Kingsley in 1:39 to finish third.
“He was an absolute hammer,” Groleau said of Peterson. “He was up 3-2 against the top seed from Gladwin, but he got caught. He wrestled really well.”
Wilson, a senior who entered the regional with a 31-11 mark, lost by fall in his opening match but then wrestled back with a pin and a 6-3 decision to advance to the third-place match. There, Wilson lost in a fall at 2:40 to Brett Boudreau of Gladwin.
“He had an amazing day,” Groleau said. “He was winning in his first match but got rolled. Then he came back with three straight (excellent) matches. The last two weeks he has been on fire. I couldn’t be prouder of him.”
Other Kingsford wrestlers who qualified for the regional were sophomore Elizin Rouse (189), who recorded a pin in his first match before dropping the next two to finish at 26-10 for the season, Izayah Reed (152) who lost his two matches, but impressed with his tenaciousness, Groleau said, and Wyatt Westman (103) who dropped his team matches but closed out an impressive freshman season in the regional round.
