Annual hoops tourney hosts title games
HERMANSVILLE — Menominee Dexter’s found its shooting touch in the second half here Sunday night in an 85-74 triumph over Iron Mountain Bimbo’s in the Class A championship game of the 83rd Annual Gold Medal basketball tournament.
Bimbo’s led 31-29 at halftime, shortly before Dexter’s gained the upper hand.
Dexter’s gained a 41-35 lead on a layup by A.J. Grazulius early in the second half.
Phil Romback drained a jump shot from the left wing, Ben Stalzer added 21-foot and running jumpers and Austin Armga sank a running jumper and two free throws for a 55-42 advantage midway through the second half.
“Credit to them,” said Armga, who was selected as the tourney’s outstanding player. “They came out with a lot of energy.
“All of us been playing together for quite a while, and we challenged each other at halftime,” he added. “We trusted each other and started playing with a little more energy.”
Bimbo’s made a run late in the contest but got no closer than 82-74 on a pair of gifters by Ryan Robinette.
Armga scored 30 points for Dexter’s, comprised of former Michigan Tech cagers. Stalzer added 18, Romback had 17 and Kyle Monroe was named Class A Outstanding Player.
“It’s fun to be part of this tournament,” Armga said. “Credit to Hermansville and the staff that put it on. This is a cool gym, and the fans and community make for a nice atmosphere.”
Carter Voelker paced Bimbo’s with 21 points. Kyle Tuma hit 14. Robinette finished with 12, and Marcus Johnson had 11.
Monroe led the way with 16 points in Dexter’s 77-59 conquest of Hancock U.P. Finest Saturday.
Jordan Chartier added 14. Armga and Mike Fisher scored 11 each, and Stalzer had 10. Dylan Johnson tossed in 22 points, and Luke Mattson had 11 for U.P. Finest.
Armga scored 23 to lead Dexter’s past Crystal Falls McNeil’s Oilers 90-62. Kyle Monroe tallied 21, Stalzer scored 15 and Grazulius had 10. Adam Nolde and Dawson Bilski hit 15 apiece, and Matt Curtain had 12 for McNeil’s.
Dexter’s then defeated Carney Juice Promotion 73-53.
Armga hit 20 points. Monroe tossed in 19, and Fisher had 12. Jason Boucher led Carney with 14, and Jared Benson had 10.
Bimbo’s opened with a 65-59 triumph over Juice Promotion Saturday.
Voelker scored 20 and Robinette had 16 for Bimbo’s. Boucher paced Juice Promotion with 18. Benson added 14, and Joe Pontbriand had 11.
Matt Wagner hit 16 points, and Kyle Johnson and Robinette added 15 each in Bimbo’s 79-63 victory over U.P. Finest. Austin scored 15, and Dylan Johnson had 11 for U.P. Finest.
Bimbo’s opened Sunday’s play with a 92-88 overtime victory over Juice Promotion, then edged McNeil’s 71-65.
Voelker led Bimbo’s with 27 points in Sunday’s opener. Wagner scored 19. Clay Gerds tallied 17. Marcus Johnson had 14 and Tuma chipped in with 11. Boucher hit 31 for Juice Promotion. Benson scored 19, and Justin Bloniarz had 12.
Marcus Johnson poured in 32 points, Tuma added 18 and Gerds had 17 against McNeil’s. Bilski scored 28, and Adam Nolde had 18 for McNeil’s.
In Class C, Spalding R Place stayed alive with a 69-56 triumph over Marinette Dubey Park in Sunday’s finale.
Josh Granquist scored 16, and Tyler Mercier added 12 for R Place. Bilski had 14 for Dubey Park.
Mercier led the way with 19 in Saturday’s 55-39 triumph over DePere, Wis. Arms of Angels. Granquist had 16, and Jeremy Ott paced DePere with 14.
In Class EE, Powers Stihl Saw Sales topped Wallace Jim’s Plumbing 55-39 Sunday.
Tucker Taylor hit 11 for the winners. Joe Starzynski tossed in 12, and Jordan Belec had 11 for Jim’s.
Max Baumler scored 12 for Daggett Got Milk in Saturday’s 76-36 rout of Powers Below Average Joes. C.J. Matthew tallied 11, and Cubby Johnson, Noah Gorzinski and Ryle Raboin had 10 apiece.
In Friday’s games, Marcus Johnson’s 26 points was enough to lead Iron Mountain Dave’s Auto past Juice Promotion 90-80 in a Class C match-up.
Kyle Johnson added 19. Geoff Smart hit 17, and Pat Flood had 15. Pontbriand paced Juice Promotion with 22. Mike Polfus and Jake Brock had 12 each, Wagner scored 11 and Jake Polfus had 10.
Marcus Harris scored 17 as Rapid River topped Iron River Shamco 58-46 in a Class D opener. Caden Pellizer tossed in 19, and Dave Pellizer added 13 for Shamco.
Josh Granquist led Hermansville Wildwood Restaurant past Wallace Jim’s Plumbing 69-45 in a Class E game. Tom Granquist tossed in 15. Kyle Bellefeuil scored 12 and Nick Pipkorn had 10 for Wildwood. Jordan Strahl had 19 for Jim’s.
Ian Gorzinski’s 20 points was enough to lead Powers Nutrifeed to an easy 60-30 victory over French Town Bellmore Farms. Trenton Schaff finished with 17.
In Sunday’s junior high boys’ games, McNeil’s Oilers rolled past the Jets 67-39, Sault Ste. Marie 62-44 and Newberry 72-42. The Jets edged Newberry 45-42 and Sault 52-41, and Newberry defeated Sault 61-45.
Sault girls posted victories over Newberry (19-10), the Jets (42-12) and Carney (45-25) Sunday. The Jets beat Norway 32-15 and Carney 31-21, and Newberry squeezed past Carney 24-23.
The tournament was set to continue tonight (Tuesday) with four games on the schedule.
Hermansville CTR 44 is set to play Escanaba Three’s Company in a Class D contest at 6 p.m.
Spalding R Place meets Iron River in a Class C semifinal at 7 p.m., followed by another Class C match-up between Esky Three’s Company and Rapid River.
Daggett Got Milk and Wildwood meet in a Class D semifinal at 9 p.m.
