Hoopsters Simmons, Kriegl receive academic honors

HAMMOND, Ind. -- Purdue Northwest sophomore Mercedes Simmons of Crystal Falls was one of 20 women's basketball players named to the GLIAC All-Academic team for the 2021-22 season.

Simmons, a psychology major, achieved a 3.25 grade point average.

Simmons appeared in 23 games for the Pride, averaging 3.6 points and 2.2 rebounds. She converted 14 of 19 free throws on the season. The Pride finished 8-18 overall and 5-14 in the conference.

Northern Michigan University redshirt freshman Brooke Kriegl of Kingsford was among 81 GLIAC women's basketball players cited for academic excellence. Kriegl, studying pre-nursing, maintained a 3.97 GPA at NMU.

She played in nine games for the Wildcats, averaging 1.3 points. NMU finished 12-16 overall and 7-13 in the GLIAC.
