Making all-state: E-TC, Maroon cagers highlight UP selections

IRON MOUNTAIN — The two Upper Peninsula boys basketball teams that advanced to the state finals were well represented on the 2021-22 Associated Press all-state teams released this week.

Division 4 runner-up Ewen-Trout Creek led the way with four nominations, while Division 3 runner-up Menominee secured two.

Ewen-Trout Creek senior Jaden Borseth was chosen for the Division 4 all-state first team, while teammates Eric Abramson and Kelsey Jilek were given honorable mention. Panthers’ coach Brad Besonen was picked as coach of the year in D4 after leading his team to its first state championship appearance since 1982.

The Panthers finished 22-3 and dropped a 56-45 overtime decision to Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian.

Rudyard, which lost 56-40 to E-TC in the quarterfinals, had the other two U.P. representatives on the Division 4 team. E.J. Suggitt was selected to the second team and Tate Besteman was given honorable mention.

Menominee senior guard Aidan Bellisle was named to the Division 3 all-state first team after leading the Maroons to the state final, where they fell to Schoolcraft 59-49.

Menominee coach Sam Larson was chosen as the D3 coach of the year for piloting his squad to a 23-4 record and district and regional championships. The Maroons were seeking their first state championship since 1967 when they competed in Class B.

The D3 second team included Westwood senior Zach Carlson and Painesdale-Jeffers senior Johnny Schutz.

In Division 2, Colin Hudson of Escanaba was the U.P. representative, garnering honorable mention.

The players of the year included Chansey Willis Jr. of Detroit King (Division 1), Mason Docks of Williamston in Division 2, Carmelo Harris of Flint Beecher in Division 3 and Brady Titus of Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian in Division 4.
