Prep wrap: Ladycats upend Patriots for win

PEMBINE, Wis. — The Florence varsity softball team scored three runs in all five innings against Goodman-Pembine on Tuesday as the Ladycats earned their first victory of the season with a 15-2 five-inning win over the Patriots in Northern Lakes Conference game originally scheduled to be played in Florence but moved to Pembine because of field conditions in Florence.

Isabella Millan, Paige Uren and Hannah Holdaway recorded two hits each to lead the Florence offense. Millan roped a triple and a single, Uren belted a double and a single and Holdaway logged two singles.

After opening their season on April 9 in a tournament in Mauston, Wisconsin, the Ladycats (1-2, 1-0) have been off since because of weather-related issues.

“Felt great to get outside and play some softball,” Florence coach Dan Robinson said. “Defensively we played great and our pitchers pitched well. We are improving every game. These kids are fun to watch.”

Morgan Tomczak, Madison Johnson and Allison Wood combined in the circle to hold the Patriots’ offense in check.

CRIVITZ EDGES LADY BADGERS 5-4

CRIVITZ, Wis. — The Crivitz varsity softball team scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning right after Niagara tallied three in the top of the inning to edge the Lady Badgers 5-4 in a Marinette & Oconto Conference contest Tuesday in Crivitz.

“It was a great, hard-played game by both sides,” Niagara coach Brad Richtig said. “We are still trying to get our lineup figured out and trying to find the spots where the girls are most comfortable playing. We are getting closer to that with each game we play.”

Abby Wells ripped a two-run homer in the sixth, her first of the season, to pace Niagara offensively. She also pitched all six innings, allowing six hits while fanning 10.

The Lady Badgers scored one in the top of the first before Crivitz plated two in the second.

Josie Learned recorded the other hit for Niagara.

“Aiva Champeau hit the ball well,” Richtig added.
