Flivvers remains unbeaten, top Marinette 3-1

KINGSFORD -- Maria Fornetti and Lexie Vross scored a goal each and Brooke Bittinger added a penalty kick to lead the Kingsford girls varsity soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Marinette on Tuesday at Commemorative Field.
With their second victory over Marinette this season, the Flivvers improved to 3-0-1.
Kingsford coach Jon Lorenzoni said he had to switch some of his players around because of the absence of Peyton Johnson, who was ill, and a slight hamstring injury to forward Erika Malone.
To compensate, Lorenzoni moved centerback Lexie Vross to forward, while Malone played back on defense.
"All Lexie did was create about six chances for herself and Ericka was terrific back on the defensive side," Lorenzoni said.
The Flivvers broke the scoreless tie when Fornetti fed Mia Counter, who was subsequently fouled in the box. Bittinger stepped forward to bang in the penalty kick to get Kingsford on the board.
Fornetti and Vross also scored their initial goals of the season for the Flivvers.
"Lexie hasn't played forward in at least two years, probably more," Lorenzoni said. "I told her she was moving positions and she didn't miss a beat. Smiled and said, 'OK, Coach.' Then went out and killed it."
Lorenzoni added that he was happy to see Bittinger push forward more often from her centerback spot.
"She was a little more aggressive on the attack and good things happened," he said.
