IM, WIC battle to stalemate
IRON RIVER — With all eyes on them, the Iron Mountain and West Iron County No. 2 doubles team battled deep into a third-set tiebreak with the fate on the team match on the line Wednesday at the Nelson Field tennis courts in Iron River.
The Wykons had won four of the seven matches at that point, leaving the Mountaineers in need of a victory from the pairing of Fulton Stroud and Ryan LaPoint to forge a tie. At the end of three tightly contested sets against West Iron’s Logan McCord and Jackson Strom, the IM duo edged West Iron 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 to level the match at 4-4.
Earlier in the day, the Wykons entertained Gwinn and recorded an 8-0 shutout of the Modeltowners.
In the IM-WIC matchup, the Mountaineers also received victories from No. 1 singles David Juul (7-5, 6-1 over Matthew Dutcher, No. 3 singles Kaden Sheldon (6-4, 7-5 over Ethan Isaacson) and No. 4 singles Reece Kangas (6-0, 6-0) over Rocky Farley.
“After falling behind early, David Juul battled back to pick up a quality win,” IM coach Marcus Celello said. “Once he settled down mentally and got in a groove, he played his best match of the season. His senior leadership is going to be important for our young team.
“We’re beginning to gain some momentum, and I’m excited to watch our team continue to improve.”
The Wykons’ four wins came from No. 2 singles Caleb Strom (6-0, 6-1 over Leanzei Kurt Adiao Ryan), No. 1 doubles Colton Holm-Sam Holroyd (6-2, 6-0 over Lucas Kassin-Dylan Lindgren), No. 3 doubles Zander Birmingham-Jonah Holmberg (6-1, 6-2 over Matt Richer-Shea McGonigal) and No. 4 doubles Lane Norman-James White (6-4, 6-0 over Hunter Baumgartner-Micah Treiber).
The tie left both teams with an overall record of 1-1-1.
