Millan breaks long-standing record at Florence
NIAGARA, Wis. — While there was plenty of impressive individual and team performances at the Niagara Invite on Thursday at Badger Field, Florence senior Patrick Milan’s stood out.
Running for the combined Florence-Niagara team, the Northwoods Storm, Milan broke a 51-year old Florence High School record in the 200 meter dash by running a 22.74, .36 seconds faster then the previous record set by Mike Weber in 1971.
With that time, Milan won the 200 at the Niagara Invite and added a victory in the 100 as well, helping the Northwoods Storm boys (121) finish second behind team champion Iron Mountain (168). Norway (118), Crivitz (92), North Dickinson (66), Forest Park (47) and Republic-Michigamme (43) rounded out the boys field.
On the girls side, North Dickinson bested the field with 130 points, seven in front of runner-up Northwoods Storm. Iron Mountain (87), Crivitz (86), Norway (74), Forest Park (61), Carney-Nadeau (35) and Republic-Michigamme (18) followed.
The Mountaineer boys were outstanding on the day, winning eight events. Luke Ruble led the way with victories in the 800, the 1,600 and the 3,200. Additionally, Joey Colavecchi topped the field in the high jump and Matthew Colavecchi was victorious in the triple jump.
Iron Mountain also won three of the four relays – the 400 (Max Jayne, Kurt Adiao Ryan and both Colavecchis), the 800 relay (Bryce Davis, Ryan and the Colavecchis), and the 3,200 (Will Fairchild, Joey Lundholm, Oskar Kangas and Adam Krackenberger).
“We are very fortunate to have such a balanced boys team this year,” Iron Mountain coach Karen Ellis said. “To place in so many events isn’t an easy task, but the boys in each category — distance, sprinters and field events — did a fantastic job today.”
Other individual boys winners included: Blake Smith of Northwoods Storm in the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles, Chase Carlson of Norway in the shot put and Evan Bruemmer of Northwoods Storm in the discus.
The North Dickinson 1600 relay of Nick Conery, Antonio Inglese, Steven Holmes and Spencer Kramer recorded a victory as well.
In the girls event, the Nordics picked up wins from Chrislyn Inglese in the 300 hurdles, Aubrey Applekamp in the high jump, the 1,600 relay team of Micah Lindholm, Ashton Hord, Vanessa Lindholm and Applekamp and the 3,200 relay team of Madelyn Applekamp, Vanessa Lindholm, Mya Grunlund and Jessica Harwath.
Other local individual winners included: Kamdan Johnson of Northwoods Storm in the 400 meters and the 100 hurdles, Taylor Adams of Norway in the 3,200 and the 300 hurdles, Gabrielle Carey of Iron Mountain in the 1,600 and Bella Pickett of Iron Mountain in the triple jump.
Pickett, along with Chloe Maycroft, Emma Ellis and Anja Kleiman, won both the 400 and the 800 relays for the Mountaineers.
“I’m so proud of the girls and how hard they worked today,” Ellis said. “With only 10 girls, they all stepped up and filled some gaps and really pushed themselves. I saw a lot of improvement overall, and to see so much this early on in the season is really exciting.”
