North Dickinson claims historic title

By BY JERRY DeROCHE 2 min read

KINGSFORD -- For 22 seasons, North Dickinson track coach Mike Roell has brought a girls track team to the Kingsford Invitational, featuring six local U.P. teams.

The Nordics totalled 141.5 points to defeat runner-up West Iron County (116). Iron Mountain (84), Kingsford (77.5), Norway (46) and Forest Park (32) rounded out the field.

Prior to Tuesday's event on a glorious day for track at Kingsford High School, the Nordics have never won the event. No longer is that true.

North Dickinson used its depth to claim the girls title, finished with four firsts, seven seconds and four thirds.

"I knew we had a chance going in," Roell said. "We have lots of depth and I know the way they compete. It was a special night."

Roell pointed to his team's results in the 100-meter hurdles, the 300 hurdles and the shot put as important finishes. Christian Inglese (18.53) was victorious in the 100 hurdles, while Micah Lindholm placed second. The two reversed in the 300 hurdles with Lindholm (55.25) finishing on top with Inglese in second.

In the shot put, Aiden Hord topped the field with a 29 foot, 1/2 inch toss, while teammate Lily Depotie was runner-up.

Each pair scored 18 points toward the Nordics winning tally.

The top individual performer in the meet was West Iron County's Danica Shamion, who continued her noteworthy season. Shamion won 100 (12.88), the 200 (1:02.84) and the 400 (1:02.84), while finishing second in the high jump.

The sophomore was coming off a high from the night before when she broke the school record and the event record in the 200 with a time of 26.57 in the Copper Country Invite in Houghton. She also set a new event mark in the 100 (12.68).

Norway distance runner Taylor Adams was outstanding as well with victories in the 800 (2:43.09) and the 3,200 (14.28.53).

Other individual victors included Gabby Carey and Chloe Maycroft of Iron Mountain in the 1,600 and high jump respectively, Katarina Hemeleski in the discus, Lyneah Hauswirth of Norway in the pole vault and Erika Malone of Kingsford in the long jump.

North Dickinson and Iron Mountain split the four relays with two victories each. No names of the relay teams were reported.
