Prep Baseball: Flivvers win invite

EAGLE RIVER, Wis. — Gavin Trevillian ripped a grand slam and pitched a complete game to lead the Kingsford Flivvers to a 7-4 victory over Wrightstown in the championship game of the Northland Pines Invitational on Saturday in Eagle River, Wisconsin.

With his team down 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Trevillian belted the first pitch he saw over the left-centerfield fence to change the game.

“It was unreal,” Kingsford coach Matt LaLonde said. “As soon as I saw the ball leave his bat, I knew this was a huge moment for him.

“What an emotional event that was. It made it even more special because he was on the mound for this game and I knew after his grand slam, he would be even tougher in the innings to follow. No one would touch him.”

Wrightstown took a 2-0 lead on 3 singles in the top of the first. The score remained that way until the Tigers added another run in the top of the fourth.

But that was when Kingsford began to make its stand. With one out, Andres Finley found a hole in the infield for a single before Sawyer Pugh smashed a home run that pulled his team within 3-2 and turned the momentum of the game.

“Sawyer’s home run definitely gave us the buzz that we needed in our dugout,” LaLonde said. “It helped sparked some intensity and emotion.”

After Trevillian’s blow, the Flivvers tacked on another run in the fifth on an RBI fielder’s choice from Connor Erickson.

Trevillian then set down the Tigers in order in the sixth and faced 5 batters in the seventh to notch the victory. Trevillian scattered 8 hits in the game, while fanning 3. He did not issue a free pass.

In their first game of the invite, the Flivvers overcame a 2-run deficit after the first inning to defeat Chequamegon 5-2. Kingsford knotted the score at 2-all in the fourth on a single by Finley, a walk to Pugh and singles by Riley Juneau and Hunter Skoglund.

“Once we tied the game, it just had that feeling that we would prevail one way or another,” LaLonde said. “After the first inning, we only allowed one other baserunner for the entirety.”

The game stayed even until the top of the seventh. Skoglund drew a walk and Garrett Brown reached on an error before Trevillian came up big with a 2-run double to put Kingsford on top 4-2.

Trevillian later scored on an error to account for the final score.

Finley went the distance for the Flivvers, allowing only 2 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 1.

“What a great way to spend a Saturday for our coaches and team,” LaLonde said. “Very proud of all of them.”

BOBCATS 12, RANGERS 7

WAUSAUKEE, Wis. — The Florence varsity boys baseball team built a 12-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning and held off host Wausaukee 12-7 in a non-conference clash on Monday.

The Bobcats (11-4) led 5-2 before exploding for seven runs in the top of the sixth inning. However, the Rangers answered with four in the bottom of the frame and added another in the seventh, but the Florence lead was too big to overcome.

The Bobcats broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the third when Trent McLain and Logan Schuls recorded back-to-back doubles to put Florence up for good as it turned out.

The Bobcats added a single tally in the fifth before the decisive sixth. Evan Johnson, Tyler Novak, Bryce Leffler, Matthew Smith and Schuls all drove in runs to stretch their team’s advantage to 10.

Leffler led Florence with 4 RBIs, while Schuls and Novak added 2 each. Schuls went 3 for 3 in the victory.

The Bobcats finished with 10 hits, while Wausaukee managed just 4. Novak threw 4 innings in relief to pick up the victory. He allowed just 2 hits and struck out 5.
