Prep Tennis: Strong winds in Iron River make for ‘weird’ tennis match

IRON RIVER — Strong and steady winds swept across the Nelson Field tennis courts in Iron River on Monday afternoon and had quite an effect on play when West Iron County hosted Menominee in a boys varsity tennis match.

“The weather did not cooperate for us today as both teams dealt with 30-40 mph winds,” West Iron coach Joe Serbentas said after his team’s 7-1 defeat. “The matches were all sloppy and full of comical errors and weird points.”

The Maroons were led by a sweep of the singles matches. No. 1 singles Brock Murphy and No. 2 singles Danny Birch sparked the singles contingent with straight-set victories. Murphy defeated Matthew Dutcher 6-2, 6-4, while Birch set aside Caleb Strom 6-3, 6-1.

The Wykons (1-2-1) got their lone win from the No. 4 doubles flight where Jackson Secord and Nico Tarsi were left standing after defeating Jeremy Salmi and Nathan Salmi 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.

“We were able to put up a decent fight in several of the flights,” said Serbentas, noting that three of the matches went to three sets. “We will learn some from this match and hopefully continue to build upon some of our successes and failures as we move forward.”

MARQUETTE 6, KINGSFORD 2

MARQUETTE — The Kingsford boys varsity tennis team picked up two three-set victories, but fell to the host Redmen in a Great Northern Conference match on Monday.

The Flivvers (1-2-1) recorded wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles. In the top flight, Isaac Nash and Ben Trevillian outlasted Jason Andary and William Oliver 6-4, 6-7, 6-0, while Morgan Sleik and Hunter Hulkonen came from a set down to defeat Lilam McFarren and Isaac Johnson 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.

Kingsford is scheduled to travel to West Iron County today for a dual matchup.
