Norway’s Popp receives top honor

NORWAY — Norway senior catcher Averie Popp was named the 2022 Skyline Central Conference softball player of the year in a recent vote by league coaches.

The league champion Knights dominated the all-conference team. Senior pitcher Kali Stanchina, junior outfielder/infielder Donna VanHolla and junior shortstop Hannah Burklund were selected to the SCC first team, while senior infielders Mackenzie Gilroy and Gabrielle Leiker were picked to the second team.

In their first year of play, the Forest Park Lady Trojans were awarded two second-team spots and one honorable mention. Freshman pitcher Kaidince Woollard and sophomore Charlie Larson were picked to the league’s second team, while freshman Dalaney Wagner was given honorable mention.

Other SCC first-team members included Bark River-Harris sophomore Christina Bower, Rapid River senior Madi LaChance and Superior Central seniors Shae Lampinnen and Riley Johnson.

Second-teamers included Bark River-Harris sophomore Faith Javurek, Rapid River junior Maizie Nelson, Superior Central senior Emma Rutter and Superior Central sophomore Rachel Johnson.

Other players earning honorable mention were Bark River-Harris senior Amanda Burton, BR-H junior Ava Arndt, Rapid River juniors Aiyana Semear and Adison Coulliard and Superior Central freshman Sammy Johnson.
