Prep Tennis: Eskymos repeat as D1 champs

KINGSFORD — Prior to last year, the Escanaba boys varsity tennis team had not won a U.P. Division 1 championship since 2007. Now, as of Wednesday, the Eskymos have won two straight.

Led by flight championships at No. 4 singles, No. 1 doubles, No. 2 doubles and No. 3 doubles, Escanaba accumulated 17 points to edge runner-up Negaunee, which totaled 15. Marquette (13) finished third, tournament host Kingsford (5) took fourth, Menominee (2) placed fifth and Gladstone did not win a match and finished sixth.

“A lot of times, you win one and maybe you might not have the same hunger for it the second year,” Esky coach Tom Penegor said. “So I really like that our team came back and stayed focused this year.”

The Eskymos can thank their doubles players for their repeat. No. 1 doubles Isaac Maki and Dawson Williams upended James Thomsen and Jace Turri of Negaunee 6-1, 6-2, while No. 2 doubles Joseph Hubert and Joseph Montel defeated Negaunee’s Gavin Downey and Bryce Storms by the same score.

The No. 3 doubles tandem of Connor Smale and Troy Delvaux knocked off Marquette’s Isaac Johnson and Liam McFarren 6-2, 6-4 for the third doubles point.

Escanaba’s other flight championship came off the racquet of Sam Rivera, who battled back from a slow start to get past Mick Kumpala of Negaunee 0-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The Flivvers got wins from three of their four singles players and from its top doubles team. No. 2 singles Niko Przeslakowski outlasted Danny Birch of Menominee in the first round by a score of 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. Przeslakowski then lost to eventual runner-up Nathan Howes of Escanaba 6-1, 6-0

Kingsford’s No. 3 singles Gavin Moore swept Gunner Wickl of Gladstone 6-0, 6-0 for his victory. Moore then fell to eventual No. 2 singles champion Tyler Lajimodiere of Negaunee 6-1, 6-0.

At No. 3 singles, Brett Berglund rolled over Gideon Barron of Gladstone 6-1, 6-0 to give the Flivvers another point. Berglund dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to champion Sam Rivera of Escanaba.

Kingsford’s No. 1 doubles Isaac Nash and Ben Trevillian edged Aden Laurin and Trevor Theugrkauf of Menominee 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. Nash and Trevillian then fell to champions Isaac Maki and Dawson Williams 6-2, 6-2.

The Flivvers also recorded a point from their No. 4 doubles team when Hunter Hulkkonen and Cale Harris defeated Jeremy Salmi and Nathan Salmi of Menominee 6-3, 6-3. The Kingsford duo played very competitively with eventual champion Seppi Camilli and Toby Camilli of Marquette before falling 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

First-year Kingsford coach Justin Beauchamp wrapped up his first season after the meet Wednesday.

“The biggest positive is this was a great group of kids that we had,” Beauchamp said. “To be able to take a lot of first-year players that came and joined the team this year, I couldn’t say anything greater about them. They’re a great group of students, they’re great in the classroom, they’re great in the community and they were great on the court.”

“We just had an abundance of parents who said, ‘Hey, they’re so much fun to watch and they’re so respectful’ so that’s a lot of the things that we pride ourselves on,” he added.

Starting at $3.50/week.
