Flivvers fall to host Marquette
MARQUETTE — The Kingsford girls tennis squad traveled to Marquette on Monday for their Great Northern Conference opener and were never able to make a dent as the Redettes shut out the Flivvers 8-0.
Marquette captured all 16 sets on the day.
Kingsford varsity coach Tracy Rutter said the result was a mixed bag.
“Today we learned a valuable lesson about the mental game of tennis,” she said. “When things start off tough, we need to remain positive.
“(But) the girls played much better than the scores reflect.”
Kingsford’s top effort came at No. 4 doubles where Ava Lovell and Libby Vross fell to Kyra Auttio and Maija Parkonen 6-4, 6-2.
Kingsford’s No. 1 doubles duo of Ellyce Doenier and Lexie Vross captured five games in their 6-4, 6-1 defeat to Lexi Hammerstrom and Hosanna Brindle, while Flivvers’ No. 2 team of Addison Rutter and Linnea Grubb took four games off Payton Bullock and Payton Pleaugh in a 6-2, 6-2 setback.
The Flivvers (1-1) were scheduled to host another GNC foe, Escanaba, on Tuesday.
