Niagara battles to 38-18 win

NIAGARA, Wis. — The Niagara Badgers varsity 8-player squad started a new chapter in the school’s history on a very positive note Friday night, topping visiting Bowler/Greshman 38-18.

Niagara (1-0) had been part of the Northern Elite Predators co-op team previously, along with Goodman-Pembine, but is now fielding its own football team.

“This is our first season as an 8-man football team,” said Niagara coach Sean McGrath. “Overall, the change is going good. There are a few adjustments that were made with narrow field and less players but at the end of the day it’s still football.”

Aiden Colenso helped pave the way for the Badgers, carrying the ball 11 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

Starting quarterback Logan Weber also had a solid performance, hitting on 3 of 6 attempts for 57 yards and a touchdown.

Niagara’s defense also provided plenty of highlights, led by Christian Hedmark with a team-high 10 tackles and a forced fumble. Eddie Swanson added 6 tackles.

The Badgers will hit the road this Friday, traveling to take on host Port Edwards at 4 p.m.

Port Edwards (1-0) opened its 2022 season with a 44-14 victory over host Goodman-Pembine at Pembine.
