WIC tops Ishpeming

ISHPEMING — An already busy West Iron County girls varsity tennis team got its first team victory of the 2022 fall season by topping host Ishpeming 5-3 on Wednesday.

West Iron (1-1) opened the season on Monday with a loss to Negaunee. And it took a team effort to get the win Wednesday, with the Wykons knowing they’d be back on the road to play Thursday at Kingsford.

“This was a very close contested match that came down to the No. 1 singles and doubles matches,” said Wykons coach Joe Serbentas. “The team score was tied at 3-3 with those two matches left to go. Both were nip and tuck with good points coming down to the wire.”

The Wykons’ top singles player Aubrey Bice was able to control the points at 5-3 on her service game to close out the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ishpeming’s Maia Hemmila.

In the No. 2 singles match, Seanna Stine topped Lilly Swanson 6-4, 6-0 to give the Wykons another key win.

The West Iron No. 1 doubles duo Callista Borolameolli and Lillie Schmutzler pulled away in the second set late with some great angle shots and put-aways at the net to close out their match 6-4, 6-3.

“Seanna Stine after a close first set really buckled down and frustrated her opponent in the second set,” Serbentas added. “As a team we still need to improve on court awareness and movement to anticipate opponent returns.”
