Wykons sweep Hematites in volleyball clash

ISHPEMING — In their opening performance of the season last weekend in the Kingsford Invitational, the West Iron County Wykons played competitive volleyball at times but struggled in key moments on their way to dropping six of their eight sets.

On Wednesday, the Wykons traveled to Ishpeming and showed they had put their season-opening results beyond them as they swept the Hematites 25-19, 25-22, 25-21.

“The girls really showed up tonight,” said first-year varsity coach Konnor Bjorkman. “We had the energy we were lacking last weekend and that made a big difference on the floor.”

Junior Danica Shamion led the West Iron offense with 12 kills, four aces and one block. Senior middle hitter Calli Pelizzer added eight kills and one block, while senior setter Kali Harty dished out 16 assists and fired two aces.

Junior Allie Salazar chipped in with six aces for the Wykons, who will participate in Saturday’s Great 8 Invitational to be at Iron Mountain.
