Back on track: Wykons return to winning ways, top Menominee
IRON RIVER — The West Iron girls varsity tennis team earned its first dual match victory early in the season but then hit a long winless stretch while playing against quality opponents.
However, the Wykons kept working and on Monday produced their second win, a 5-3 decision over Menominee at the Nelson Field tennis courts in Iron River.
West Iron (2-7-1) captured the top two singles flights and the top three doubles flights to notch the victory.
The Wykon singles victories were rather lopsided with No. 1 Aubrey Bice defeating Pearl Wellens 6-1, 6-2 and No. 2 Seanna Stine knocking off Lola Doyle 6-0, 6-4. No. 1 doubles Callista Bortolameolli and Lillie Schmutzler also put up a straight-set win, a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Madelyne Barker and Anna Axtel.
However, West Iron’s other two victories were three-set affairs.
At No. 2, Autumn Smith and Kaitlyn Smith came from behind to defeat Kamryn Olsen and Jetta Bayerl 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, while No. 3 doubles Bailey Hoffart and Aubrey Richardson persevered for a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2 win over Isabelle Bentley and Courtney Buscher.
“This was a tough match and very closely contested in the doubles flights,” WIC coach Joe Serbentas said. “It was nice to start this week off with a win and hopefully we can string a couple more together as the week progresses.
“We need to continue to focus on net points and court awareness as we move down the final stretch of the regular season before the (Great Northern Conference) and U.P. tournaments.”
