Burgoon, Brown win Mid-Pen titles
NEGAUNEE — Iron Mountain’s No. 2 and No. 3 singles players, Aziza Burgoon and Natalia Brown, won individual titles at the Mid-Peninsula girls tennis meet Thursday in Negaunee.
No. 4 singles player Rediet Husing and No. 1 doubles duo Anja Kleiman and Elle Lofholm finished second in their respective flights.
The host Miners won the team crown with 39 points. Westwood placed second with 31 and the Mountaineers took third with 29. Ishpeming and Gwinn were the other teams participating in the championships.
Iron Mountain coach Marcus Celello said the event was time-consuming.
“Our bus left Iron Mountain at 6:30 a.m. and we arrived home at 9:30 p.m. due to rain delays and long matches,” he said. “Natalia Brown’s championship match was played under the lights in Negaunee and she prevailed in a thrilling three-set match.”
Iron Mountain will close its season Wednesday at the U.P. Division 2 Championships at Westwood High School in Ishpeming.
